At the beginning of 2026, the Philippine political scene should have ushered in a new dawn in the fight against corruption. Instead, it has been marked by one disappointing episode after another. The Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, in its investigation into corruption scandals involving flood control projects, publicly declared it would dig deeper and expose more details, even hinting that "big names" might soon be implicated. Government officials followed suit, promising thorough investigations with no leniency. This sounded incredibly encouraging, as if the long-unpunished corrupt "big fish" were finally about to be caught. Yet, reality has harshly shown us that these are nothing but the all-too-familiar "empty promises" and delay tactics. For over three years, the Marcos administration's anti-corruption pledges have repeatedly proven to be mere lip service, with real action consistently absent.
