I'm more comfortable behind a camera than anywhere else. Armed with my newest toy, I venture into the first day of school, ready to take on the world. However, with a new school policy implicated, my cataloging of the day may be cut short before it begins. None of the pictures used are the property of the author. Summer is actually over. To be entered in the Back to School Writing Contest, about the first day of school, or misery, depending in who you are.

For Ashton Matthews graduating early from high school was number one on her to-do list ever since she transferred high schools last year. But, life decided to throw a few curveballs her way that make her reconsider many of the ways she looks at life.

She screamed and shoved me in the chest. "I will, I miss you, Issa, I miss your company and-" "All you ever did was ignore me." "You were with Mark!" Daniel faces a time in his high school life when he has to come to terms with the fact that he loves Issa. Maybel is what people call 'awkward'. Luckily over the past few years she made friends who love her for it. That is until she moves to a knew school for her Junior year. Word Count: 1,854

It went by like a movie. Scene one: I'm slouching in my chair as we go over emergency procedures. Two: I'm then under my desk (out of sight, out of mind, right?), the alarms continue to blare as we switch off the lights and fly under the desks. Three: An announcement rings around the room before getting cut off with a gun. Our principal's final words haunted my head. "This is not a drill. Please stay under." She has a few classes with her close friend Dianna, a farmworker who's as enthusiastic about animals as she is and has a knack for getting into trouble.
