If it's alright, I'm going to give a bit of backstory. In this story, Voldemort attacked the Potters after hearing a 'prophecy' from Dumbledore/Trelawney. This attack didn't kill anyone, since he stunned the adult Potters before attempting to kill Harry. Obviously this failed, and he was left without a body. On Dumbledore's orders, the attack remained secret until he needed it to be used for propaganda and power.

The Lestranges torture Rita Skeeter for all her lies. A bit of a nod to the fact that the media lies for its own ends, and a bit of a nod to JKR's poorly thought out plot holes, at least a few of them. If you dislike Skeeter and long to see the Lestranges in action, this one's for you. If you dislike torture, this one is not for you. Word to the wise, and unwise alike, if you think someone is dead, perhaps they aren't, so talking rubbish about them is not smart.
