Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts have rather peculiar jobs. They give people another chance to live. Literally, they go into dying peoples memories to fulfill their dying wish. But creating a new memory is not as simple as pressing a button. In this story, they must travel through the memories of a dying man, Johnny, to fulfill his last wish. And Johnny's last wish is, of course...to go TO THE MOON. "Every once in a while, there comes a life that is rather peculiar."

On a vacation away from home, young twins Simon and Jezebel, along with their older brother Clyde, find themselves in a hotel owned by their grandparents. It's there that they discover an aged storybook titled "The Nine Lighthouses", which retells the heroic deeds of a Spanish explorer and an English sorcerer who sailed the Pacific Ocean in search of the Promethean Flames that dwelled within lighthouses scattered all along the Oregon Coast, and that it was his duty to keep the flames burning. But the story also tells of a thief who stole the flames from the lighthouses, casting the west coast into darkness, and that if the flames were never returned, the entire world itself may be shrouded in fog, never again to be illuminated by the sun's brilliant light. Their grandparents assure them that it's just an old story, but with the arrival of a mysterious traveler and his daughter Elizabeth, odd happenings occur within the old hotel, and when everyone wakes up the next morning, they find they are no longer in the hotel, but on the ship of a Spanish traveler, heading for a lighthouse off the coast of Oregon...

There are few buildings that harbor such power in our world as the lighthouse. It has stood on the edge of society for millennia, acting as a bridge between safety and danger, darkness and light, hope and despair. Yet by their very nature, they are isolated and easily forgotten. However, reader, do not be fooled by their seemingly bucolic appearance. There does not seem to be a lighthouse in the world without a tale of tragedy, or a rumor such as that of ill-fated consequences. Also, do not mistake the roaring furnace of light as a cheery sign. By all means, light can symbolize life, hope, and joy. But every now and then, a tragedy is born where light shines the brightest.

Ray has no interest in lighthouses, though his future depends on them. His son, Lincoln, is a fisherman, gone to sea in search of a 'payday catch'. Ray's wife and Lincoln's mother has been lost at sea for nearly twenty years after a sailing accident, causing Ray to take a job as a lighthouse keeper, hoping to make a difference for even just one life. After fifteen years manning the lighthouse with other keepers, it is finally automated leaving Ray to 'enjoy his retirement', though when Lincoln doesn't come back Ray returns to the lighthouse night after night waiting for his son to return.

Although not that much in the end, for that her love was destined. She felt the sea salty smell fluctuating in the air. Here it came.
