Maverick Brown doesn't expect kindness- let alone friendship- when he transfers to Harbour View High. To his surprise, most people welcome him warmly. Everyone except one boy. Myles Elk, the stereotypical captain of the basketball team, seems to care about nothing but his players. So when Maverick joins the team mid-term thanks to his uncle, Myles doesn't appreciate someone getting in without even trying out. His resentment only grows when the rest of the team welcomes Maverick with open arms. But after one of Myles's frequent panic attacks at a party brings them unexpectedly close, everything begins to shift- for both of them.
