**Prologue**
Darkness was not the absence of light.
Luneth learned that the moment the vortex swallowed him.
It was pressure.
It was sound.
It was memory.
It was every fear he'd ever had, whispering in a voice that sounded too much like his own.
He tumbled through the void, weightless, breathless, the world spinning in fractured twilight colors. His fingers still tingled where they had almost-almost-caught Link's hand.
"Dad-!"
The word tore out of him raw, desperate, terrified.
But the vortex didn't care.
It stretched him.
Pulled him.
Twisted him.
Like it was trying to peel him apart and see what he was made of.
He curled into himself, arms wrapped around his chest, eyes squeezed shut.
Don't think. Don't feel. Don't remember.
But he remembered anyway.
Link's arms around him.
Link's voice promising he wasn't alone.
Link's face when he learned the truth.
His father.
His father who didn't even know him yet.
His father who died in Luneth's time trying to protect him.
His father who had reached for him in the collapsing chamber-
-and missed.
