❝ ᴛʜᴇ ʜᴜɴᴛᴇʀꜱ ꜰᴀɪʟᴇᴅ. ɪᴛ'ꜱ ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴛɪᴍᴇ ʟᴇɢɪᴏɴ ᴘɪᴄᴋᴇᴅ ᴜᴘ ᴛʜᴇ ᴍᴇꜱꜱ ᴛʜᴇʏ ʟᴇꜰᴛ ʙᴇʜɪɴᴅ. ❞ Nearly ten years have passed since the Kabane arrived from nowhere, plaguing the modern world with fear. Following the fall of Aragane, Yashiro and Hayatani stations, along with Unato and even the Shogun's stronghold Kongoukaku, humanity had no choice but to live without a place to settle. No place to even sleep. The Hayajiro, or locomotives, were the pieces of metal separating human flesh from the Kabane's onslaught. It was the only defence that seemed to endure, and hope was starting to fade. Till ʟᴇɢɪᴏɴ appeared, and promised to create a new world from the rusted ashes that remained.

In 1851, all telegraph stations in the USA were connected and by 1940 there were 40 telegraph lines across the Atlantic. Corrugated paper was invented in 1856, to stiffen tall hats and, in 1874, Oliver Long inventing corrugated board. In 1861, waterwheel powered air compressors and pneumatic drills, cut construction time by 16 years for a tunnel in Switzerland. Fritz Haber's discovered a process to make ammonia fertilizer in 1914. In 1887, Nicola Tesla invented the first AC motor. In 1903, an automatic machine was able to make 2,500 bottles an hour. WHO THE HELL ARE WE? is a series of short books and videos describing the evolution of civilization. Almost everyone on the planet is five times wealthier than their ancestors only 50 years ago. This astonishing phenomenon has also improved health, education, and longevity. The cause; an explosive growth in ideas and productivity. It began when we learned to control fire, evolved articulate speech and stumbled onto the way to create infinite wealth; free trade. The discovery of agriculture made us richer but we also learned how to destroy wealth. Great civilization grew up but then disappeared leaving only incredible ruins and ideas. Later books detail some of the ideas and developments that increased the average life span from about 40 years to more than 80 and the average world income from less than $3 to more than $33 per person per day (and to $140 per day in some countries).

After Ryanville & Jameswood main Dispatcher Rusty Maclennan retired, he was replaced by a girl named Clover Ann Franklin, Abraham noticed something was suspicious about Clover, but he quickly forgot about it. After a while, his strange feeling came back after she did something very daring. What was it she did? You'll find out in The A's Rivalry Part 1.

What if the world never left the steam era of the rail industry? Or better yet, what if diesels still came around, but instead of being found to be suitable replacements, they were found to be just as economical as steam locos, and therefore merely supplement them? What if, in America, the Interstates were never built in the manner in which they were in reality, and all the federal money spent on them instead went into other endeavors? What if the preservation movement still happened? What if...... I'm getting ahead of myself? It's probably best I not reveal to much of the story, lest I shoot myself in the foot on readership levels because I accidentally spoiled the general idea of the story and setting. Well, it's here in this alternate take on history that we follow our protagonist, "Big" John Spagler, a Bible thumping, truth seeking, 6 foot, 6 inch tall hillbilly from Western North Carolina with an appreciation for everything railroad. From the very ballast underneath the tracks, to the machines that thunder up and down those tracks, to the stations and terminals, to the freight yards, to the very nuts and bolts and rivets and welds of the rolling stock, to the architecture of the railroad buildings, and last but certainly not least, to the people that keep them running smoothly. Focus won't be on the rails for the first part of the story, mostly character and setting development and the interactions between the characters and other story elements. Don't worry though, the rails shall have their time in the limelight. Please keep in mind that this is literally my first ever Wattpad story so it may or may not be all over the place.
