Bruno gawked at his mother incredulously from the other side of the wall. His expression became even more disbelieving when he saw his sisters reluctant agreement. His mama had just asked them to focus less on Mirabel, to ignore her. Not in so many words, but the general meaning was the same. When he'd left to live in the walls, he'd expected her life to be hard, but he hadn't expected the cruelty of his family, hadn't expected the neglect, the dismissals, the bullying and the ridicule. He probably should've, after his own shunning, but somehow he'd expected better. He took a deep breath before his eyes hardened in determination. Mirabel would not spend a second longer with these assholes, if nobody else would protect her, Bruno would.
After all Black Sheep's have to stick together, yeah?
