This short story follows a researcher and record-keeper named John Villanueva who, in 2025, becomes obsessively focused on a derelict, geometrically aberrant house of worship in Providence's Federal Hill-once used by the Starry Wisdom cult. Gaining entry through a hidden opening, he discovers strange unidentifiable texts and a polyhedral artifact called the "Shining Gem of Neng," linked to an entity known as the "One in the Dark." After prolonged observation of the object, Villanueva perceives alien realms and realizes he has roused the entity, which seeks to extend its influence over Earth. During a city-wide blackout, the being emerges as animated darkness causing widespread disturbance. Believing himself responsible, Villanueva resists its offers of power, seizes the artifact, and casts it away-sending the entity back to its realm. He is left psychologically scarred, knowing the One in the Dark is but one face of the greater "Great Lord Of Discord, Lester," and that the entity's influence is said to have driven ancient wars and major conflicts like WWI and WWII, including being worshipped by Adolf Hitler before abandoning him in his final days.
