Everybody on the island knew Andrea Whitlock.
Not like knew her, obviously. But you knew of her. Figure Eight girl. Clean car, quiet smile, parents with a last name that opened doors before you even knocked. The kind of person who looked like she belonged anywhere with white columns and a security gate.
She went by Andi, though. Which already told you something.
I noticed her because she didn't act like most Kooks. She didn't talk loud or laugh like she wanted everyone to hear it. Didn't look at the Cut like it was contagious. Mostly she just watched. Like she was waiting for something to break.
Pope noticed her for different reasons.
Which, yeah- figures.
Andi Whitlock had this way of standing there like she was perfectly fine, while also looking like she was about five seconds away from slamming those drumsticks of hers onto the drums and never stopping. Always dressed like she stepped out of a catalog, but her eyes never matched. Too restless. Too awake.
The thing about Andi was, she had everything.
And somehow, you could tell it still wasn't enough.
Which is dangerous.
Because people like that? They're either gonna stay exactly where they are forever...
or they're gonna blow their whole life up trying to feel something real.
And Pope (smartest guy I know) walked straight into that like he didn't even see the warning signs.
I guess I can't blame him.
