"Ah! Sister, whose room is this?" Jennette's voice lilted with a curious edge as she squinted at the heavy, ornate door tucked away in a shadowed corner of the Ruby Palace. The air in the corridor suddenly thickened; the nearby maids stiffened like statues, their gazes dropping to the floor. When Jennette turned back, she found Athanasia's eyes-usually bright-now cold and impenetrable.
"Don't ever mention this room to anyone," Athanasia warned, her voice a low, sharp blade. "Even to him. Stay away."
Jennette's brow furrowed, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Does someone live here, Sister?"
"I will only say it one more time," Athanasia replied, her expression hardening into a mask of steel. "Stay away from here."
- Lovely Princess, Chapter 4 . "A Sisterly Distance"
So... that's who it was?
I clutched my hand to my chest, a sob of pure frustration bubbling up in my throat. My own baby sister didn't even get a name-drop! She was treated like a footnote, a ghost in her own home! I swear, if Claude killed her too, I won't just run away-I will tear this entire empire down brick by brick!
A tug at my sleeve broke through my spiraling thoughts. I looked down to see a pair of wide, innocent eyes looking up at me.
"Athy-Unnie? Aurie want to draw with Athy."
The anger vanished, replaced by a fierce, protective warmth. I scooped her up, tucking her small frame against me.
"Yes, of course, my sweet Aurie. Just rely on your Unnie," I whispered, pressing my cheek to hers.
"We'll live happily together, just the two of us. I promise."
