Lucas Friar, the new kid, is kind of sort of a nerd. He devotes all the time he has to get good grades and study for tests. He never gets detention and most definitely doesn't get involved in fights. His best friend is the dorky but extremely intelligent Farkle Minkus. Yet, he is haunted by his past. Maya Hart, the rebel, is kind of sort of intimidating. She doesn't let anyone cross her, and the only person she trusts is a cheerful girl named Riley Matthews. She's the one you'd hear arguing with the teacher, or getting in constant trouble. However, she has a life no one knows about. And the two meet. Lucas leaned back in his seat as Mr. Mathews walked away, finally letting himself cry. He knew that crying meant giving up, he knew that, but what else was he supposed to do? His girlfriend got shot.
