In an alternate timeline, Amicia did not lie to Hugo about their mother, and they had managed to keep him stable over a longer period of time with Lucas' help and the book Sanguinis Itenera. It's been a year and a half since Lucas the Apprentice met the de Rune siblings, and they have been sheltering with the other orphans of Chateau D'Ombrage for most of that time. Lucas had been working on the elixir from the book Sanguinis Itinera and is becoming increasingly frustrated at his lack of advancement with it. Hugo is degrading quite suddenly over the fears that his mother may be dead by now. After further questioning, Lucas realizes they're going to need more than what he has his makeshift laboratory. They're going to have to go back to Amicia's old home... just him and Amicia. And Lucas receives a surprise reaction he was not anticipating.

Amicia de Rune has tried everything, and that means EVERYTHING to save her brother dying of a mysterious cancer. Her parents are gone. She's supposed to be at university... But no one seems to be able to save Hugo! Even the greatest doctors in Europe seem inept at helping her brother. So, Amicia's last resort is a famous doctor in New York City.
