When Heaven discovers that Lilith is pregnant with Lucifer's child, panic spreads through the angels. A daughter of Hell could tip the balance of eternity.
Sera makes a choice that will change everything: as soon as the child is born, she orders two of Heaven's least willing guardians - the sharp-tongued Lute and the arrogant Adam - to steal the baby away. Neither of them wants children. Neither of them even wants each other. But when Lute whispers, "If we don't, she'll grow up never knowing love-only expectation," the mission is sealed.
Banished to Earth, disguised as humans, they're commanded to raise the child - Charlie - as their own. By day they stumble through mortal parenthood, and once a year they return to Heaven to lead exterminations, leaving Charlie behind.
But Hell does not forget. Lucifer and Lilith will not forgive. And as Charlie grows, flashes of red in her eyes remind Lute and Adam that secrets can't stay buried forever.
A stolen child. Two reluctant guardians. A Heaven and Hell at war.
What happens when love is born in the unlikeliest of places?
