Shirley Madden felt like she was always losing. Her friends saw her as an asset, and her family barely cared. Losing was something Shirley had grown accustomed to, so much even that she was beginning to think that it was all there was to life. Whether she was losing in a game, competition, or even with her thoughts internally, Shirley was always losing. Elliot Smith was a winner. He was the main character in his own story, and an observer in others. Elliot could be where he wanted to be and what he wanted to be. Shirley however was no more than the stranger walking through streets at the back of the movie. She was an observer, but nothing more. Unlike Elliot, Shirley could not comprehend what she observed. She could not use her role as an observer to become a player in the game. He was a winner. She was a loser. What happens when a winner loses?
