"Can I bother you for a second?" she asked, casually tugging at his shirt sleeve.
"You always bother me, but go ahead," he signed, picking up a thick file from his desk.
"So anyway, I was thinking..." she began, trailing off into what he immediately categorized as background noise. He tuned out her energetic rambling, sinking deep into the fine print of his paperwork.
"...Okay?" she finally asked. Hope practically vibrating in her bright green eyes.
"Uhh... Yeah, yeah. Sure," he grunted, nodding vaguely without looking up.
Suddenly, a ear-piercing scream of pure victory shattered the quiet room. He flinched, startled out of his trance, just in time to catch her performing a chaotic little victory dance. Against his better judgment, a genuine smile crept onto his face-a rare visitor these days.
"Thank you!" she squealed, zooming out of his office like a toddler on a sugar rush.
His eyes followed her exit, the small smile lingering on his lips. Then, slowly, the haze cleared. His smile melted away, replaced by a sudden wave of cold dread.
Wait a minute... what on Earth did I just agree to?
