Denis Dean is the entertainment writer/editor at "Something Else," a glossy, New York-based consumer magazine. He overflows with talent and ambition, but his lack of confidence hinders his dream of becoming a major player in the ultra-competitive world of magazine publishing. All that changes when, after getting walloped by a bolt of lightning on a suburban golf course, Denis discovers he can read people's minds. Though this phenomenal endowment freaks him out at first, he's soon ecstatic to discover that it's an amazing benefit to his career. Denis' mind-reading ability also comes in handy in his personal life, when he gets the goods on his cheating girlfriend, helps a woman whose family erroneously believes is in an irreversible coma, exposes a deceitful coworker and helps his father out of a severe financial jam. Throughout it all, though, the gift's rewards come with a price: Denis' guilty conscience torments him, he longs to unburden himself to someone but fears the consequences, he suffers backlash from jealous coworkers, he alienates his only sibling and his newly gained confidence is challenged when his ability is suspended. "Riding the Crest" is fun, lively and moves along at an entertaining pace.
