A continued saga , part 3. -- He spoke fluent Bahasa with the coolies, his tone clipped, official. Then he switched to English for the British clerk beside him, instructing him to jot something down. The change was so smooth it unsettled even those accustomed to hearing two tongues at once. The dockworkers answered his questions, but their voices carried the careful neutrality of men who knew too much was dangerous. They kept their eyes down-until Kai appeared. It began quietly. A spine straightening here, a head lifting there. Then it spread. Men who had slouched under questioning now stood taller. Dockhands turned their faces toward Van Der Berg instead of away. Even sailors from neighboring wharves drifted closer, silent, watchful. No one spoke, but the current had shifted. Van Der Berg felt it immediately. The air seemed to press differently against his collar. He looked up, and there was Kai Sung-pale eyes steady, still as stone, watching. The Dutchman had never met him, yet recognition was instant. Not European, not local, but unmistakably the man who commanded this wharf.

An alternate history epic set in the Sultanate of Malacca at its most precarious height, right after its clash with the Portuguese fleet of Alfonso de Albuquerque. Now, not too long after Albuquerque and his ships lie dormant in the depths of the Indian Ocean, the kingdom looks beyond its own borders, trying to secure a place in the larger world. Written from the viewpoint of a journalist in a modern day editorial style, follow one ordinary woman's fulfillment of her extraordinary birthright. One that will lead this meteoric empire's war against an unimaginable enemy rising from the West.

In 1912 Malacca-a British colony where Eastern traditions meets Western ambition-a drifter's guitar echoes through the harbor town, igniting a lyrical tale of quiet transformation, female resilience, and unforeseen currents that awaken a dynasty. Witness tradition reborn as silk and beadwork conquers royal courts; feel the subtle power of women commanding their fortunes, while men brave perilous tides of trade, concealing rubber, tin, and copper from blockades as war looms. This is the ballad of a family remade, learning to dance with the storm.
