The Alliance turned Nektarios Shepard into everything it needed him to be: decorated soldier, inspirational survivor and living proof that humanity refuses to die quietly. It never asked what Akuze left behind inside him. Now Shepard has been assigned to the SSV Normandy, an experimental warship born from an uneasy alliance between humanity and the Turians. One successful mission could place him among the Spectres-the Citadel Council's most powerful agents. Then Eden Prime burns. An ancient beacon forces a warning into Shepard's mind: machines descending from dark space, entire worlds reduced to ash and every civilisation in the galaxy erased so completely that even their names are forgotten. The Council sees the visions as damage from Akuze. Saren Arterius knows they are real. To stop a rogue Spectre who believes submission is the only path to survival, Shepard must place his trust in the very people the galaxy has taught him to doubt: a turian investigator bound by rules that protect the guilty, a young quarian hunted for evidence powerful enough to start a war, a krogan mercenary carrying the anger of a dying species and an asari archaeologist whose own mother has sided with the enemy. They may be the only ones willing to believe him. But beyond Saren and the coming invasion, another name keeps surfacing-one buried in sealed reports, abandoned laboratories and the nightmares Shepard brought home from Akuze. Cerberus. The massacre made Nektarios Shepard a survivor. Discovering who sent his unit to die may turn him into something else entirely. Akuze was only one grave. The Reapers intend to make the next one large enough for the entire galaxy.
