A fic outlining the hypothetical first episode of my AU I discuss in my tumblr blog: @simpsonssitcom For those who haven't seen the blog: it's 5 years in the "future," in that all the characters are 5 years older than in canon, but it's still set in modern day because of a floating timeline. The basic idea is: since the show is so bloated and self-contradictory now, what if we cherry-picked a selection of timeline details from the original show and made a reboot, trying to keep within guidelines of an internally consistent world? It only picks from the first 30 seasons and is initially set in late 2019, ignoring details from season 31 and onwards.

Homer Simpson has felt nothing but lost ever since the death of his family. It was his fault. It was all his fault. Springfield, the city he had once called home was now a ruin called New Grand Canyon. But one day, while visiting the final resting place of his loved ones, Homer discovers a secret within the depths of the canyon...the souls of the children of Springfield had been transformed into ghostly coyote pups, left to wander aimlessly around their rocky grave. Lisa learns that stealing can lead to serious consequences when an accident at the mall sours her relationship with her mother. In the meantime, Homer tries to get a hold of a tape to see a hilarious incident that occurred while he was off duty.

I never read a lot of Simpsons fic where Homer is a good father and husband so I thought I'd write my own. With mine, Homer dies-divorced from Marge and with the kids hating him. He dies regretting how he lives. He gets a second chance to give Marge and the kids a life the deserve.
