She grew up barefoot on weathered docks, steering an airboat before she was old enough to drive and memorizing every winding bayou, hidden cut, and patch of roseau cane like they were streets in a neighborhood, so if someone gets lost in the marsh, she's the one people call. Her father owns the busiest seafood restaurant and marina on the Louisiana coast, a place where fishermen, game wardens, deputies, tourists, and locals all eventually end up, and the sheriff's department has watched Evelyn grow up, usually because she somehow finds herself in the middle of whatever is happening out on the water. Then there's Beau Landry, a quiet football player who has lived in Cameron his entire life, always surrounded by the same group of friends. They've spent years in the same small town without ever really knowing each other, until one summer when Evelyn's older brother invites Beau and his friends to a cookout after a day on the water. It isn't love at first sight-it's barely conversation-but after Beau accidentally gets pulled into one of Evelyn's adventures, he realizes the girl everyone calls "the marsh rat" notices things no one else does. For generations, people in Cameron have whispered about strange lights deep in the marsh, abandoned camps that seem to appear and disappear, missing journal pages, and an old disappearance everyone stopped talking about years ago. Everyone says it's just another bayou legend, but Evelyn isn't convinced. Alongside her two best friends, her older brother's crew, and Beau reluctantly tagging along, she begins following forgotten maps, old family stories, weathered journals, and clues hidden where only someone who truly knows the marsh could ever find them. The deeper they go, the clearer it becomes that someone has spent years making sure the truth stays buried beneath the reeds-and the marsh remembers everything.
