He worries that they will become angry with him and throw him out the way the rest of his foster parents did. He finds himself growing more and more depressed and angry, and nothing the Washingtons do can make him feel better. Alex finds himself desparate for acceptance, and ends up in a tumultuous friendship with none other than John Laurens, a gay boy rebelling against his homophobic parents. Will the Washingtons give up on Alex, or will Alex finally learn to trust again.
