The country is separated into twelve districts, each district based on something as simple as a zodiac sign. Families have been torn apart and people who were once close have now turned their backs on each other. Alec Lightwood is one of the many teenagers who got dragged away from his family and now spends his time with his foster family, a homophobic household consisting of four people who're incredibly close with each other but not with him.
