Mary-sue Stories

I'm a member of various writing sites, and I notice that while most of these sites are vastly different from one another, the membership—along with the complaints—are virtually the same. And I'm tired of seeing these complaints.

Scarvonetta was NOT like other girls. She wore SWEATSHIRTS, you see--I can already see you shuddering at the thought of such deviance. She had been adopted by her math teacher Jensen Ackles as a teenager and spent her dads in self-imposed exile from the rest of her evil classmates. Also living in her normal little town was Tyler, the sexy smirking jock werewolf; Aesha, his stalker who won't give up on her soulmate no matter how many restraining orders he files; Johnny, Tom Hiddleston's useless side-character saved from death by his casting; Ellen, the REAL werewolf; and old Mrs. Smith, the only sane person in this entire region. Come along as they go through their hyper-realistic teenage lives, filled with so much serious heartbreak, INTOXICATING AROMA, and brilliant originality that critics can't help but say, "What the actual hell am I doing with my life right now?"

Amelia, Destiny, Liara, and Reina are too weird for their town. Maybe it's the time or the setting, but they're just not main character material. They would be background players added for diversity in most old sitcoms. But when a literal Mary Sue comes to town, and sweeps the whole region into a frenzy of tropes and cliches, only these four seem to be immune to her musical numbers, wild scene changes, and dramatic over-reactions. Since the self-named members of the Band exist outside traditional narratives, they might be the most interesting people to modern audiences. Whether because they're queer, fat, aro, ethnically diverse or clinically depressed, they wouldn't be focused on in the past, but only they can save their small town from the ravages of an uncaring plot. *** What if the movies and commercials were right and the world was full of improbable happenings. What if life imitated art? The Mary Sue stories are about a group of people for whom the world rearranges itself. The Mary Sues are dragged along a set series of plots by unknown forces, but those forces are also beholden to them. The real story is that there are some people below the notice of stories. Odd, different, or seemingly unimportant, these four must grapple with the changes the Mary-Sues will wreak on their comfortably mundane small town.

Marysues? Avoidable. Flaws? Necessary. Uniqueness? Easy. Don't get down on yourself if you have troubles with character development. It's easy as time goes on. Need some pointers? Here, take this.

Writing stories is creating a world that makes you happy, right? Well, I guess this world is what made high-school era me happy, and for that little kid, I'm rewriting it to be slightly better. At least, I hope that it is slightly better! ---- Loki Draken is an overpowered magical werewolf, and the Alpha of a group of absolute misfits. Life is all fine and dandy until a transfer student shows up together with a metaphorical storm that sets in motion a change that will forever send Loki's life on a spiral - towards her past, to new faces and old, and on towards the future. But that's a little foreshadowey, now isn't it? For now, the biggest concern is the danger posed by the mysterious Fenrir Silvermoon, and the sudden rift it tears in the pack. Will the Misfits be able to come together, despite being as different as they are?

!!COMPLETE!! Mareyn is perfect, but everyone HATES her??? She has purple hair and purple i's, but no one wants to be her friend!!!! Will she survive the tournamenrt! Remember, having Sue traits doesn't always mean your character is bad. Context and how the character is written are important! You can't have a character blurb with all the potentially dangerous traits listed and expect someone to be able to tell whether or not it's a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Writing well is far more complicated than that. If you are worried about your character, trust your gut instinct and get someone you know will be objective to review your story, not just the character alone.
