Loki's cell was cracked during the skirmish in the prison. He escapes. However instead of leaving Asgard, he finds Frigga in the hands of Malekith about to be killed. In desperation for the only one who cared for him Loki, offers himself instead, hoping to appease the elf. However Malekith makes a different call and takes both. In captivity Frigga connects with Loki as they suffer.

There is one power on earth no man can break, destroy, or take away. Thoughts may be one thing that never change, but the bond between a mother and child is something that can never be broken. There is no power on earth that can challenge a mother's love for her child. Nothing can stop the bond that will never be broken. History is full of tragedy and mistakes, as is the present. Maybe we can't be faulted for all of it - we don't get the full picture of the past, only sullied scribbles and the oaths of unsavoury men. There exists in another universe a time machine that allows them to see the folly of their ancestors, and I'd like to think that they'd have an answer to madness. Perhaps it's not so alien to the answer we need. But this is all irrelevant. It doesn't take a historian, a time traveller, or any smart man to provide the answer to our worst troubles. Anyone from any walk of life, good and bad, high and low, can tell you what is the fundamental answer to evil. It's an answer that even the youngest can understand in all its many forms, and if they were to ask you for it, you could tell them love, child.
