Why do humans have different skin colours? Why are some people darker, some lighter, and why does such a visible difference exist in the first place? The answer begins long before modern societies, borders, religions, or racial categories. It begins in Africa, with the evolutionary history of Homo sapiens. As humans migrated across the world, they encountered different environments and different levels of ultraviolet radiation. Over countless generations, natural selection, genetics, migration, population history, and other factors helped shape the diversity of human pigmentation we see today. But somewhere along the way, a biological difference became something more. Skin colour became connected to identity, race, social status, beauty, discrimination, and ideas of superiority and inferiority. But was that hierarchy ever written into human biology? This book explores the science behind human skin colour, the evolutionary journey of our species, the genetics of human diversity, and the historical processes that transformed biological differences into social categories. It also asks a deeper question: If our differences are part of the same evolutionary story, why should one human being ever be considered worth more than another? Our skin colours may tell different stories about our ancestors. But they do not determine our worth. Biological variation came first. Human hierarchy came later.

" Aye you know Janah likes you right?," I heard as the class was settling down from the announcements. " And? I don't like her. She ugly," he said as he looked up catching her looking at him. She quickly looked down even though she had already been caught. That day she promised herself she would ignore him. Did she? No she didn't because as soon as he got on the bus she saw his smile and she began to smile too.
