What will Arthur do once he finds out that his rather revealing last words were not, in fact, his last words? Set in the episode 1x11 The Labyrinth of Gedref.

Why do you care so much? The boy is just a servant. What if Arthur was the one to kiss Merlin instead of Gwen in 1x04 The Poisoned Chalice? After returning from the journey to retrieve the Mortaeus flower, then watching Merlin almost die and kissing him, Arthur is arrested for disobeying his father's orders to stay in Camelot. At least he has some time alone to think about why exactly he kissed Merlin. Merlin, on the other hand, can think about the same thing from the comfort of his home. When Arthur is released from prison, they both need to talk.

Merlin's favourite Camelot tradition is the one according to which all servants and their masters switch roles for a day, thus allowing Merlin to have a day off and enjoy all the services that Arthur - his new manservant - is obliged to provide. Merlin's insistence on following Arthur and the knights to battles had not gone unnoticed by people. Why would this defenseless, weaponless servant be present in dangerous and life-threatening battles? Gwaine, along with Morgana and Gwen, took matters to their own hands. When both Gwen and Merlin witness another accident caused by Morgana's magic, there is no more denying. Despite Gaius' strong advice against it, Merlin decides to help Morgana and tell her and Gwen about his magic. Meanwhile, Arthur follows Merlin to Morgana's chambers to inform him that he needs to let her rest and should absolutely not be bringing her flowers. Because she needs to rest. It's Arthur's first Christmas after coming back from Avalon, and he's finally found the best gift for Merlin. The gift is so perfect that it might just make Merlin cry. (Or: Arthur finds photos of Château de Pierrefonds online, prints one and gives it to Merlin, who's already forgotten what Camelot used to look like because of his long life.)

"Fetch the mattress from my quarters and bring it up here," Arthur commanded. Merlin doubted that that was even possible. "How am I supposed to carry a mattress on my own?" "I don't know, strap it to your back." But what was he supposed to do when Arthur gave the order? This is a fic about how Merlin actually did manage to carry the mattress all the way from Arthur's chambers to Gwen's house on his own, although at a great cost. (He was exhausted afterwards.) Although, maybe when he's so tired, Arthur will allow him to stay at Gwen's and share the mattress? (It was rather enormous for just one person, wasn't it?) What this is: A Modern Merlin AU. What this isn't: Just a normal story. What makes this story different from most Modern AUs is that, at heart, it's the same story as the tv show. Each episode is taken from their medieval time and placed into a modern one. Read this, and you'll see the same Merlin and Arthur, but with a modern twist.
