He receives many gifts from his parents: including a fully paid trip to Ireland, the promise of a beautiful wife, and a precious heirloom pearl that supposedly once belonged to an Irish mermaid. He is expected to get married, and within a year, produce an heir to the family. The only problem: his parents' potent drug, which had made them wealthy and famous, had also made their son infertile. Kiandra runs away from home on his birthday, planning to settle forever in Ireland and start anew. But his flight never reaches its destination as he was spirited to the ancient underwater Kingdom of Tír fo Thuinn. Living amongst the Merrows in a world unlike his own, he makes a terrible mistake when he steals one of the Merrows' eggs and becomes its new host mother. Now, he must learn how to survive and hatch the Mermaid's Egg if he ever wishes to return back home before the Demon Balor finds him and consumes his soul.
