It's Arthur's first Christmas after coming back from Avalon, and he's finally found the best gift for Merlin. The gift is so perfect that it might just make Merlin cry. (Or: Arthur finds photos of Château de Pierrefonds online, prints one and gives it to Merlin, who's already forgotten what Camelot used to look like because of his long life.)

Uther would always set up Arthur with princesses but every single time, Arthur would make up excuses to why he doesn't want to be with them. Uther then decides that he will set him up with a prince to see if he will still make excuses. Arthur was still mad when his father told him this but when he met the prince, Merlin, he said that he will give it a go. Merlin also didn't know how he felt about this considering that Camelot didn't accept magic in their kingdom. Uther was desperate to get Arthur either a prince or princess to rule with him when he dies. So, he lifts the ban on magic since he knows that Merlin isn't evil and that his kingdom is extremely strong. What will happen when they are forced to spend most of their time together and actually bond?

Merlin has waited for Arthur return for to many lifetimes. Unable to find him alone, he has asked the headmasters of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to aid him in his search for centuries. When Albion's need is greatest, will Merlin be able to convince a recent Hogwarts graduate that he is the once and future king before it's too late?

It's been over a thousand years since Arthur's demise and Merlin has been patiently awaiting his return. He's traveled the world and gained a talented apprentice, Ellie, who helps him prepare for Arthur's return. Aithusa's very excited when she learns her first words, but it only causes problems when she follows Merlin back to Camelot to share her talents with him. Especially when she won't stop flying and shouting new words that she has learned from Merlin - and when Arthur happens to witness all of it right when he wanted to get some rest after training. "Fetch the mattress from my quarters and bring it up here," Arthur commanded. Merlin doubted that that was even possible. "How am I supposed to carry a mattress on my own?" "I don't know, strap it to your back." But what was he supposed to do when Arthur gave the order? This is a fic about how Merlin actually did manage to carry the mattress all the way from Arthur's chambers to Gwen's house on his own, although at a great cost. (He was exhausted afterwards.) Although, maybe when he's so tired, Arthur will allow him to stay at Gwen's and share the mattress? (It was rather enormous for just one person, wasn't it?) Gaius, Gwen, and the remaining knights see it, and the new of Gwaine's death doesn't help anyone. Merlin becomes emotionally distant, and though he's still snarky and joking, there isn't quite that shine in his eyes. Gwen tries to grieve with him, being his closest and oldest friend, but Merlin insists that he's fine. Until he forces himself to clean Arthur's room, and the all too familiar memories he's been trying to forget come tumbling back, forcing Merlin to admit that he really isn't fine. Merlin felt the golden light fade from his eyes as he looked to Arthur, who was standing mere meters away from him. He didn't even have to look at the King to feel the expression on his face. No sooner had he looked to the other man; Merlin had frozen on the spot. It was as if the world had stopped at their feet and that he and Arthur were the only two people standing in it. Arthur and Morgana overhear Merlin's conversation with his mother, and after magic is used in the fight, they both realize that Merlin is a sorcerer. Despite not really wanting to, Arthur decides that Merlin should stay in Ealdor. Now it's Morgana's job to kick Arthur back to Ealdor to get their friend back. But that is not the only reason Arthur wants Merlin to stay with him. Set in the episode 1x10 The Moment of Truth.

What if Merlin took little Mordred to hide in Arthur's chambers instead of Morgana's? Would Arthur betray his own father in order to help them or would he hand them over to the guards instead? When Merlin bursts through the door and sees Arthur there, he has no idea what the prince will do. But the length to which Arthur is willing to go for Merlin will surprise them both.
