"Is that a challenge?"
Harriet Potter-Durin has survived basilisk, Dementors, Death Eaters, Horcruxes, dragons, death, resurrection, and one very moldy Dark Lord.
So when Fíli and Thorin tell her she'll be safe in the Blue Mountains while they reclaim Erebor, she has one answer:
"Orders are suggestions delivered with unnecessary confidence."
Fresh from Hogwarts and the war, Harriet should be grateful. Instead, she has Lily Evans's temper, James Potter's flair, Sirius Black's rebellion, and a family habit of chasing danger for love.
And Fíli is not just someone she loves.
He is her husband. Her One.
She will not be the wife who waits.
Only Dís knows her secret: Harriet is an Animagus.
A snow leopard.
After promising Dís the Company will return, she follows them across Middle-earth in secret.
To Thorin's Company, she is an enigma: a skin-changer with green eyes who appears in danger, steals food, argues in feline theatrics, performs wandless magic, terrorizes Kíli, defies Thorin, and occasionally smacks Fíli for complaining about his "stubborn wife."
Fíli thinks she'd like Harriet.
He's right.
But Harriet knows war better than they do. She refuses to lose another family.
The Quest for Erebor will be deadly. Smaug will rise, armies will march, Ravenhill will bleed, and Azog will hunt Durin's line.
But fate forgot one thing:
Harriet Potter-Durin does not care about canon.
Thorin will come home.
Kíli will come home.
And if death comes for Fíli-
it will face a very angry snow leopard.
