As the evaluation is in progress, Shadow was sent to collect the shattered pieces of the Scepter of Darkness. However, this time is different, which came to his surprise that G.U.N. approved Sonic's volunteer to join the classified mission. Companions, friends, perhaps frenemies, Shadow couldn't describe their relationship. It felt weird to have someone once again, shine their way into his life like... what Maria used to. And he has a good reason to be so distant. He has another form, named Fleetway, that will kill any friends Sonic made and leave Sonic grief-stricken. He learned of this form whenever he reunited with Sonia and Manic, his two siblings, who he stayed with for a month or two before Fleetway butted in and killed them and his Uncle. But one day, when Sonic was almost killed by someone named Infinite, someone saved him. Three people, named Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose and Tails the Fox saved his life from Infinite. Amy persuaded Sonic to stay with them in their home Green Hills. On that day, he broke his only rule: never get attached.
