The eighteenth entry of the 2020-2021 Film Journal is "Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow". In this unhappy piece, I examine how the promised horrors of the previous installment come home to roost and how this development reflects the true nature of "Gundam".

The invaders fired without warning. The space station exploded in a soundless ball of flame, incinerating the Patrol ships as they scrambled to launch. Lasers burned swathes through the planet settlements, destroying buildings and killing thousands in their path. In less than an hour, Bellatru was a smoking ruin. Then, the visitors launched the ground troops.

The sixteenth entry of the 2020-2021 Film Journal is on the compilation film, "Mobile Suit Gundam (1981)". Here, I look back on my experience with this anime series, the sub-genre of military science-fiction, and how this film's construction begins the thematic groundwork for what makes "Gundam" tick.

This is the sequel to Galaxy Dog, but it can be read as a book in itself. The characters in Chapter 1, for example, are completely new and we will only learn how they fit into this sequel as the writing progresses. The books from this series are about humanity in a far future galaxy, a future so remote that Earth is all but forgotten.
