Minstrel Stories

400 years before the events of the Trojan War on the island of Ithaca lived Elaena a young girl who lives with her mother Nadia, two younger sisters, Alecto and Cleo and helps run the family bakery in town. She was born and raised on the island and is very much in love with Ithaca. Everything changes one day when while running errands for her mother Elaena meets a gifted young minstrel named Alisander. Alisander is a passionate musician who instead of keeping the money he makes for himself he gives it to those who are less fortunate. As time passes the two of them grow closer but Elaena fearing commitment in a intimate relationship draws back. Alisander is dismayed by this but he respects her wishes. But what will happen when Alisander falls ill with a mysterious illness that rapidly ate away at him. Will Elaena be able to rally herself and save the person that has creeped their way into her heart? *Special note if any of my readers are familiar with Photoshop and knows how to make really good book covers, I would be so grateful if anyone would be willing to make a cover for Reluctancy. A young minstrel searching for inspiration, finds it in the castle of a wicked king who keeps two cursed lovers as his slaves. This is a short story I wrote in 2003, I think, and it was published in a chapbook locally as the winner of a local short story contest. I'll be posting it in four parts.

The title is supposed to be The Black Asati. I was trying to find a good name for an ancient flute-like instrument and I accidently put flute. But the correct title is The Black Asati. So anyway, here's the summary: In the year of 1345, a black asati was created in a dark lake of northern Sweden and it was created for a purpose. The one who plays the Cursed Song shall be cursed to have a black heart until a true friend breaks it with the song of music. One hundred years later, a young boy of the name Järle Aalberg is given the asati and played his first song which was the song that turned his world into darkness. This story is what happens next. But the handsome minstrel has plans that go beyond music, and they include the secrets held within the chambers of a noble...and her own house. Now, she must choose between obedience and knowledge, between duty and freedom, between a living death and a life that might make her wish she were.
