The demigods are off on a "quest". No prophecy, only a message from the gods to find some demigods... at different schools with interesting pairings. It will be a tad cliche, but I'll do my best. From what Will's seen, it starts off with a fairly civil fight with the only casualties being potatoes and a tiny cut on his sister's lip. But when tensions between cabins grow the next day, the healing of the injured demigods involved go awry due to something else other than the simple injuries they're recovering from. So distraught by one of the instances, Will tries to figure out what's been going on, but when he does, his state of mind leads some of the others to believe he's just lost it.
