Kailani is a twenty-two year old girl in New York City. Her family long gone, her only company is her dog, mizu. She works at a books store and lives in a studio apartment, but that's all background information. When at work, she comes across a book that seems normal at first. However, the author is unknown. Curious, she takes the book home and begins to read. The main character, Atlas, is a twenty three year old boy known for the murder of his parents, the king and queen. Killing them effectively makes him the king of everthorn. As she reads more and more, she feels as though atlas, the narrator, is speaking directly to her. She ignores it at first, but later she becomes more and more obsessed with him. Little does she know, atlas is in love too. Yet they can never be together. Or can they? One evening when reading, Kailani feels her eyes begin to feel heavy. Suddenly, there's one...two...three gold flashes. When she opens her eyes again, she sees lush green trees, mizu, and...is that a castle? On a hill? She needs to get home. The question is how. Or...is she stuck here forever.

Yo's name really does not fit her personality. Yo means "positive" in Japanese, but instead, Yo is a silent girl with a sad and somewhat...heroic past. An immigrant from Kyoto at age 5, losing her whole family but her little brother, Hikaru, the two fled to Tokyo to obtain a better life. Yo however entered Tokyo with one eye, and with no explanation on how she lost it. She began to live with her grandmother, Sakura and Hikaru, and Sakura was able to afford an artificial eye. Yo and Hikaru go back to school. Aiko, a smart, beautiful girl is in Yo's class, and tries to get her to talk. Yo ignores. As the year goes on Aiko and her friend, Mizu try to find out Yo's secret. One day, Yo is attacked by older students and is left on the ground crying. Those tears, will explain...everything.

Spirit user, Sakura Nagasaki, was being targeted by Lionel Fernandezchesco whom was another spirit user but instead of being good, he decided to take control of the underworld, becoming bad. Believing that the Spirit user had became one before, Lionel planned to kill Sakura and steal her soul to once revive the Spirit user again. But because Sakura was lost and had no idea what was going on, the 4 element users descend down from the Upper World to no only guide Sakura to destroy Lionel but to protect her.
