Set in the aftermath of Haley's death in Criminal Minds, this story follows Emily Prentiss and Aaron Hotchner after grief fractures what once felt steady and certain. They were happy once - quietly, privately, in a way the whole team saw but never questioned. But loss changes shape. Aaron retreats into control and responsibility, convincing himself distance is protection. Emily lets him go, even when it costs her more than just him - it costs her Jack, too. When the BAU is called in on an emergency domestic homicide, a young boy survives after witnessing his father kill his mother. He refuses to speak to anyone but Emily - the first person who finds him, the only one he trusts. As she becomes his anchor through the investigation and the courtroom, Aaron is forced to watch her do for this child what he once pushed away from his own life. The case unfolds slowly, painfully - mirroring their own fracture - and as the boy finds the courage to speak the truth out loud, Aaron and Emily are confronted with the things they never said. This is a story about grief, about the children left standing in the aftermath, and about whether love can survive the silence meant to protect it.

Alyvia is a girl who has been without a father since she was born, a mother since she was three, and without a caregiver since her grandmother died. Leaving her stranded as a ward of the US embassy and an international school in Singapore. With her trauma-filled past & being stuck in Singapore, she begins to give up hope. Charlotte Ann was adopted by Emily Prentiss when she was 14 years old; her parents were unsubs in a 2018 case worked by the BAU. Four years later, Charlotte is 18 and moves away to college. Emily is now Section Chief of the BAU, with more responsibility than before, and is unaware of how much Charlotte is struggling in college- until her daughter appears at her office door a day earlier than she was supposed to.
