Mortuary Histórias

This is a short story inspired by a Twitter convo about how to preserve dead bodies. (This is more of a humorous take than a practical guide.) Not sure what more needs to be said! 😅

It's not the dead that bother mortuary photographer Toby Shaw. It's the living who are determined to make his life hell. Between his sister's husband (a bully), his boss (almost certainly some form of undead creature) and his father (slowly going mad), he has a lot on his plate. One particularly bad day gets worse when he meets Cordelia Rossetta, a woman who claims to be haunted by her dead husband, who shows him a photograph that cannot possibly exist.  Toby finds himself drawn into London's occult scene as he tries to unravel the mystery of the photograph and what happened to his father. But he better be quick, because the bodies are starting to mount up - bodies with their eyes and heart ripped outcut out and their hearts missing.  Submitting to agents at the moment so only a preview of the first few chapters is up.

Elizabeth Morgan is a licensed mortician. Her job is to preserve the deceased and make them presentable. Lately she's been experiencing strange encounters at the morgue. Doors flying open, knocks at the body freezer and the occasional singing in the long stretch of the poorly lit hallways. Is it spirits or something else?

A story appropriate for Halloween. A young man learned the lesson. We are born as we die. Alone.

The mortuary stood at the edge of the city, a monolithic structure shrouded in silence and secrets. Its walls bore witness to countless stories of lives ended too soon, whispers of the unknown lingering in its dimly lit halls. For most, it was a place of closure-a final destination where the dead found rest. But for Lyra Moore, it was a labyrinth of unanswered questions, where reality blurred and darkness thrived. Lyra had taken the job at St. Helena's Mortuary hoping to leave her troubled past behind. Yet, as the nights grew longer, and the shadows deeper, she found herself ensnared by the eerie aura of the place. Strange symbols carved into bodies, cryptic whispers in the silence, and a growing sense that someone-or something-was watching. This was no ordinary mortuary. It was a threshold between the living and the dead, where every corpse held a story and every shadow concealed a secret. Lyra was about to discover that the dead don't always rest-and some secrets are buried for a reason. What began as a job to escape her own demons would soon become a descent into the unknown, where the line between life and death was as fragile as the whispers in the dark.

This story is set in the early 80s. Anna Flores has always wanted to become a doctor ever since she was a little girl. she's been in college for a few years and she was ready to become everything she wanted but something stopped her. Her mother, Nancy Flores killed herself. She says it was because of the lose of her husband, Anna's father. While seeing her mother before the funeral she ends up speaking to the head of the Morgue. He offers her a job there if she was willing. She decides that she would take it. Will it be the worst decision she makes?

Being a mortuary technician isn't an easy job at the best of the time, but twenty-five year old Amy is about to get distinctly more than she signed up for.
