Moses Stories

In 1883, a thirteen-year-old boy discovers that God has left a weapon behind: Nehashtan, the Rod of God. It has raised the dead. It has called down storms. It has healed the broken and punished those who would misuse it. It has been passed down through the ages from Moses to Merlin, and now it has fallen into the hands of Gregory Mayhew's Uncle Anton, a former circus performer who has gone from stage magician to traveling miracle salesman. Mr. Miracle's Exodus is a 70,903-word weird-western novel: Death Valley Days meets The Twilight Zone, with the epic Western sweep of Lonesome Dove and the unsettling theological speculation of Michael Moorcock's Behold the Man. When Anton accepts a million-dollar contract to produce a river in Death Valley, thirteen-year-old Greg joins him along with his older brother, Brett, on an expedition across the American West. But the Rod is no ordinary instrument. It has a will of its own, and Greg gradually discovers that its history reaches back far beyond the American frontier to the prophets of the Bible and perhaps even further - Creation itself. The deeper Greg gets into the mystery, the more frightening the truth becomes. The Rod does not simply grant miracles. It judges the people who wield it. Told through the recollections of an elderly Gregory Mayhew in 1949, Mr. Miracle's Exodus is a story of faith, family, resurrection, and the dangerous consequences of putting the power of the divine into human hands.
