At the outbreak of the Second World War, Lady Felicia Montague is a bored married countess. She has left her husband, but most people still think that they are married. While her husband is partly out of her life, her eye is roving. Flight Lieutenant Jimmy Mahon is from Dublin, born and bred, Mrs McCarthy was his neighbour and treated him like a son. Jimmy has a troubled life, he is an RAF pilot who is fighting in the war. But when Jimmy and Felicia meet in the village of Kembelford, they fall hopelessly in love with one another.
