It may start like this: You're sitting in class, squinting your eyes together to try and make out the tiny and blurred squiggles on the blackboard. You rub your left eye once, twice, trying to get rid of that irritating itch you've had since that morning. The fuzzy letters remain the same. You shrug and think you might need new glasses. An excerpt from a life with MS. Written for the justwritebits June 2018: Music.

A story about Isadora Thayer. You know how sometimes you forget who you are? Or you have lost complete feeling to everything in existence and all that's around you? Where numbness pours through your veins and you can't help but let it happen? Your mind is out of control, it's just a blank space and there's nothing. Nothing. Multiple Sclerosis. A condition that doctor's still have no clue how people get it. It can't be cured. This condition is an inflammatory disease in which the insulating nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. Isa loves to run. But each time she crosses through that finish line, her legs are lost with feeling and her mind is elsewhere. She collapses into a heap on the track. She can't feel a thing. When she was diagnosed her parents tried everything, but they just couldn't figure it out. Right when all hope was lost, someone stepped forward. Someone that will change her life, but also theirs. His. This is not only her story, but his too.

Hello to all that that live their lives and to those that live their lives a little differently. I live my life a little differently through the often invisible disease of Multiple Sclerosis which continues to change my life daily from what I had otherwise dreamed. It has both taken and given in every respect. As a poet I wanted to write about my experiences with the disease within me. I am always inspired by music, a force that can unite us all. Music, I think, is the nearest thing that can make us sing, dance, sway and to come closest to feeling the feelings of another. It is my passion to bring both people and art forms together. In M.usical S.ensations I juxtaposed the uniting force of music with the dividing force of a disease that is often indescribable. I overlayed my words of my own battles with MS on art (music) already created to communicate something new. The comfort of understanding the beat, the knowledge of a song, with the new lyrical expression I created to voice the struggle. I call this compilation of poems a constellation because each piece represents another symptom or phase, and the constellation of symptoms are vast and ever changing. I hope this mashup of art brings about an understanding by readers, a jolt of both comfort and discomfort; or even a sensation of this is how it is and this is how it should not be. A device to communicate what this disease feels like through music, something we can all feel within. A beat of harmony and a note of enjoyment, a symphony of aspirational comprehension. I hope you find something in this constellation that you 'Like' and 'Share'. M.usical S.ensations is for us all, however we choose to use it, however we end up feeling it. I will be releasing more pieces of my 'sensational' poetic playlist, but for now, please enjoy my first. I welcome feedback and I thank you for reading. Erin Vander Linden

"You missed the funeral." I blurted out, sounding more bothered than I was. "I know." He answered. His gaze fell on the ground. "Can I come in?" I nodded and opened the door further as I stepped back, allowing him to go inside. Kyle placed his bags on the floor and took off his shoes. I just stood there not knowing what to say or what to do, so I slowly closed the door. Standing up was starting to become tiring so I leaned back on the wall behind me. "Are you hungry?" I asked. An easy question, yes or no. Small talk like 'how are you?' or 'how was the trip?' seemed irrelevant, and I didn't want to interrogate him by asking why he was here or why he wasn't at the funeral just yet. So this felt like as good a place as any to start.

Story of a date, the one with my unpredictable and cheeky roommate. A forced coexistence, which was born in 2007, but which is destined to last a lifetime. A journey into my life, a coexistence that is difficult to accept but impossible to keep hidden. An example of how people live today with multiple sclerosis. I'm offering you a ride on a roller coaster called multiple sclerosis. When a pathology totally changes your life, it doesn't mean it's only for the worse.
