Life has always been an acquired taste for Lilly.
Her effort felt like a leaky window frame in a rainstorm. Bad luck, she told herself. Still, the urge for more kneaded on her taught nerves. She buried herself in survival and fiction to avoid the brutality of her useless fight against life, and the truth of her ghost of hope holding no merit.
So when the doctor gave her that grim look, eyes never meeting hers, she almost felt relieved. "It's cancer, Anaplastic Astrocytoma, stage three." Life didn't change just blurring together into a heap of pain and sense of disbelief as she slowly watch her already poor appearance deteriorate into an emaciated and pale figure who could no longer rise from her bed. Alone.
Time is a cruel mistress, desperately craved but physically rejected, and Lilly felt her time drying up wringed from her body through sheer will and the fading embers of her long dead hope.
It was a gloomy day when she died. Heavy clouds shadowed the sun sapping what little warmth of autumn was left as sleets of ice cold rain poured from the violent clouds drowning out the noise of her blood pumping through her ears. Her ragged breaths hidden beneath the roar of thunder and pelt of rain. A small blessing for her shattered dignity.
She didn't call for help. The pain that haunted her fading as her brain slowed, tacit acceptance and secret relief as she finally closed her eyes.
