MARIA and the MUSES -- a synopsis Maria is a seventy-two year old Greek widow who has just been arrested. She has had a difficult life. Born into the Nazi occupation of her Aegean island, she grew up during the Greek Civil War and its aftermath in the impoverished fifties. Married off in her teenaged years to a rich man many years her senior, she suffers the indignities of an abused wife for forty-seven years as Greece struggles with the political chaos of the sixties, the tyranny of the Junta in the seventies, the fake normalcy of the corrupt eighties and nineties, and the exaggerated promises of the European Union in the new century. Finally free of her husband, who dies in 2004, Maria spends eight peaceful years with her books and her friends, until that fateful morning of her reckoning in 2012, at the nadir of the Greek financial crisis. We go back in time and relate her story to uncover the nature of her crime.

As the three daughters, but specifically Lorena and Marissa, learn about their past, their family tree and their powers, a threat rises from the dust. A vendetta that never lost its bitterness, even in death. 400 years later, the hate is still very, very strong.

In a world that is not quite Neu and not quite anything else, Nox and Sola witches and muses run amock in the broken Kingdom of Hexe. The North hosts the Lunaris Witches, the Nox or Luna, with alignments to Lunaris and to darkness. The South with the Solaris Witches, the Sola, and their affinities for Solaris and light. Astéri is a witch living in the North, a Nox. She is Bouvardia of the Flower Bouquet, a group comprised of both Sola and Luna Witches from all corners of Hexe. However to her kingdom she is Astéri Anthyllio, Queen of North Hexe, Witch of the Ma'avri, Member of the Flower Bouquet, and one of the seven Protectors of Neu. There is talk of a rebellion if the two halves of the land are not made whole and the only way to do so is through a union - a marriage between the Queen of the North and the Prince of the South. Unfortunately her lover is not too keen on the idea, and some of the public isn't either. With something much more sinister, much more pressing brewing in the distance, Bouvardia Astéri cannot afford to waste time on trivial affairs. She must gather those who can help her or she would have to risk the lives of herself, her people, and her crown.
