The Mystery Squad faces their toughest challenge yet when John Baxter's father comes out of hiding with a plan to avert the so-called "Millennium Bug" before it destroys all of twentieth-century civilization.

When wealthy socialite Madame Beatrice L'faire suspects her husband is having an affair, she hires PIs John Baxter and Rosalyn Smith to expose him. During the investigation, however, the two soon discover they are not alone. October, 1991. John Baxter and Rosalyn Smith are working as unlicensed private investigators on New York City's Upper West Side. Despite the exciting job title, Baxter is bored to tears. His cases are nothing but an endless succession of marital affairs. He's done, but he accepts one final case when Madame Beatrice L'faire asks Baxter and Rosalyn to investigate her husband. With her wealth, he supposes, the two won't need to work another affair in their lives. On the way out of her building, though, the two run into another PI investigating the same affair, and this one is the real deal. The PI, a suave older man named Harry Monroe, proposes the three collaborate. Baxter turns him down, but soon finds that not all of Monroe's offers are so easily refused. Completed but not perfected. One autumn evening, famed zoologist Harold Holmberg chases a burglar away from his prized possession, an abstract masterpiece by the late gorilla painter Igbo. Fearful the burglar might strike again, he compiles a list of three suspects, and summons the Mystery Squad to his mansion in Northern California.

Suspected for the murder of a wealthy widow, John Baxter and Lance Donovan must solve the real crime and find money to repay a deadly debt.

To repay a debt, the Women's Expeditionary Club's newest initiate Elle Navarro suggests hiring private detectives Baxter & Smith to find lost eighteenth-century explorer M. L. Holst's body. On the mission, John Baxter must find a way to work with his aloof partner Rosalyn Smith, who wants to treasure for himself.

With time running out, Baxter, Lance, Danger, and Rosalyn must identify a man without a name from the confines of their office or lose their credibility.

Judge Hobart Resch of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals hires John Baxter and the Mystery Squad to search for his missing daughter, who has escaped from her mental health clinic. Upon arriving at the Ursine Discovery Institute, the amateur detectives discover that the situation is far more complicated than the Judge made it out to be. Meanwhile, they are pursued by the de Sault brothers, two Frenchmen also hired to solve the case in the spirit of laissez-faire economics.

Despite the cover, this story takes place when Fidds and Ford are in college. This story does differ from the cannon story, so bear with me! Basically Ford and Stan didn't get along for a few months, but are back to inseparable, and Rick Sanchez is here (it'll advance the plot later, trust me).

Rosalyn tries to uncover a scandal involving his assistant, Christine Short, while Baxter is hired to defend him from it. Meanwhile, the son Barrow's lawyer, Baxter and Rosalyn's friend Lance Donovan, soon discovers that Christine Short undermine Barrow's candidacy. At the same time, Baxter and Rosalyn's secretary, a woman nicknamed Danger, accidentally sets into motion the events that lead the other three to believe the plot against Barrow is real.
