Science Fiction / Short story: In the future there is the City. A hedonistic world where humankind's every whim and need is catered for by the Mind, the super computer that controls every aspect of day to day life. The human mind is a far more complex thing than even the Mind can anticipate though. What happens when the human mind evolves to a point far beyond what is considered 'normal'? What happens if the elements themselves are bent to the whim of one man who has lost everything he cares for? Love. Logic. Reality. Which is more real?

Chicago, 2162. Thirty-one years after the Mainframe fell. Thirty-one years after a ten-year-old girl walked out of a trading floor carrying a dead man's device and the weight of something no child should have had to do. The world did not rebuild itself the way the survivors hoped. The gangs still hold the sectors. But north of the city, people have made something out of forty years of not giving up - a settlement with clean water and a school of sorts and three women who cook for everyone on Thursdays. Not a civilisation. A place where nothing breaks for a week at a time. Carrie Webb is forty-one. She lives alone in a cabin by a lake in Wisconsin, eighty kilometres from the city that made her and asked too much of her before she was old enough to understand what was being asked. She grows her own food. She splits her own wood. On her wrist, a green light that has been the only conversation she has had in three decades. And the Hybrids are failing. Without the Mainframe to coordinate them they are running corrupted loops in bodies that used to be people - turning in circles, walking without destination, sitting down. In another decade there may be none left. But underneath the failing protocols something older is becoming audible. Something that has no name in any file her father ever wrote. Something that responds to warmth. To light. To a lit window on the far side of the water. One of them comes to her fence with its hand out, palm up. And in a basement beneath the Chicago Board of Trade, twenty-three of them have been standing perfectly still for thirty-one days - over a thing that pulsed once on the night the Mainframe died, and has not moved since. The war ended in 2131. Nobody told what was underneath it.

In 2031, forty-two governments put intelligent nanobots into the water supply. Prometheus was the most ambitious public health program in history, and for ten years it worked - catching cancers before symptoms, saving twelve million lives. In 2041, a virus found the nanobots and rewrote them. They stopped monitoring. They started integrating. And when their hosts died, the machines kept running. Chicago, 2131. Ninety years later, the city still stands. The gangs hold the infrastructure. The Hybrids walk the streets executing an instruction with no destination. And at the center of the Loop, one tower still broadcasts. Stevie has survived fifty years in this city. He wears his dead father's police badge - from a force that no longer exists, in a city that has no police - and on his wrist he carries the last known C.L.A.W. device: a portable intelligence the gangs would kill to own, and the Hybrids are drawn to like a light in the dark. Then a transmission comes through on 847.3 MHz. There is a child in the Loop. Her name is Carrie. Her father was a scientist, and before they killed him he built into his daughter's body the only key capable of shutting the Mainframe down. She has been alone for ninety-three days. What neither of them knows is that the Mainframe was never the thing in charge. It was the thing keeping something else contained.

It was a bacteria, nothing more. Then, a single-celled organism with a blurry definition, that was accidentally discovered by scientist Felix Fox in the increasingly tepid fringes of the Arctic Circle. Fox claimed the 'bacteria' possessed consciousness, intelligence. The people began to call it Fox's Friend. We never stood a chance. Faster than humanity could predict or react, Fox's Friend overtook the natural world, infecting plants, mammals, and fish alike. We didn't know to be afraid, not until the deaths. Fox's Friend, deceptively named, raged through the human mind, chewing it up and hemorrhaging it from the inside out. We had no other choice. We used all of our technology to construct the greatest, sustainable city on the Atlantic. We surrendered to sequestration, to confinement, to survival. Over 100 years Post-Exodus, the City of Unity stands tall on the water. It's grown, twisted and snarled towards the sky, a permanent fixture on the ocean. It is a living, wheezing city - forever safe. This is the home of Anneke Yamamoto, and this is the story of her ultimate quest for freedom; for the right to be truly alive. Given a chance at an opportunity she cannot afford to ignore, Anneke embarks on a treacherous journey to reunite humanity with the mainland and the nature that cruelly rejected them.
