I'm really proud to write this story as an entry to the #planetorplastic campaign with National Geographic. I had a National Geographic subscription as I grew up. I have fond memories of the stacks of yellow spines in our bookcase and flicking through the pages. It really helped form my view and philosophy on the planet, people and our role in it from a young age. This is something very different from what you would usually see from my writing - this is my personal experience with freediving and how it brought me closer to the Ocean and helped reveal our role in it. I will preface all of this with the sacred rules of freediving; if you want to try it (and I suggest you do!) contact a professional instructor for training and you should never, ever, ever freedive alone.

What if the story of a diver rescuing a manta ray was the only good story about the oceans that a person from the near future could tell? In a time of plastic-clogged oceans and ecological change, what memories and stories could that person have to tell? This is my first entry for the #PlanetOrPlastic National Geographic writing contest: https://www.wattpad.com/638334874-planetorplastic-writing-contest-planetorplastic After writing it, I wanted to balance it with a more hopeful version, which I've written as a second entry for the contest, titled "Manta Night Fever", at: https://www.wattpad.com/story/169811081-manta-night-fever

Having personally witnessed that vision, you are now in total dismay of the future that awaits humankind. You're starting to think that all of our efforts would just be wasted, it would later on just be the cause of our inevitable doom. You are currently sitting in your small, yet comfy dark grey couch on your living room, wearing your usual white pajamas and green sleeveless t-shirt, with the television turned on and showing news about the recent wildfires that just happened in California and Florida. Out of nowhere, sleep punched you right to the couch and you're starting to have a dream, yet another vision... Are you sure you want to know your dream? If no, then wake up to reality and fight it But if yes, then let us begin... •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• "The present is what binds the future, what we do today is the outcome of what would happen tomorrow. If a person plant a seedling, ultimately it would become a tree. But if a person throws plastic a day, then in a year, the environment recieves 2.5 trillion plastics thrown away. And you say that it's just one plastic... Such a pity" •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
