My contribution to the #PlanetOrPlastic Writing Contest on Wattpad sponsored by National Geographic. More than 5 trillion pieces of plastic are already floating in our oceans, and this number is growing. World plastic production has increased from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 162 million in 1993 to 448 million by 2015. By 2050, virtually every seabird species on the planet will be eating plastic. Around the world, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute. More than 40 percent of plastic is used just once, then tossed. Estimates for how long plastic endures range from 450 years to forever. Some 700 species of marine animals have been reported so far to have eaten or become entangled in plastic. (Facts gathered from: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/plastic-facts/) These facts are real and scary. This plastic world is our reality, and the only people who can make a difference are us. Spread knowledge. Know the truth.

Entry to the National Geographic Planet Or Plastic contest. Doesn't really follow either of the pictures, but it is about the same concept. I'm not really expecting to win. But this really is a serious issue, and I'm just here to help raise awareness with my own style. I would've written more, but the stories are limited to 500 words. This is exactly 500 words. Here's the link to the contest: https://www.wattpad.com/story/163475700-planetorplastic-writing-contest ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fusion was supposed to erase our problems. No more fossil fuels, no more global warming. Oil-fired power plants shut down. Carbon dioxide emissions were halved twice in less than a year. Now we had oil, and nothing to do with it. Except that wasn't true. We did have a use. One huge sink for the world's entire supply. Plastic.

Every soul longed for a friend, so when I stumbled upon a floating pink stick, I couldn't help but say hi. "Where did you come from?" I asked him. He didn't respond. Perhaps he was voiceless. "You must be very lonely. Me too. Want to be friends?" It bobbed in the water. Yes. --- A #PlanetOrPlastic entry Word Count: 499 words Completed on the 24th of October, 2018 Highest Ranks: #12 in planetorplastic 29/11/18 #3 in seahorse 16/11/18 #1 in plasticpollution 29/11/18 If you like this story, you'll enjoy my latest #PlanetOrPlastic entry "The Hearts Left Behind".
