Part black. Part Irish. Part Lumbee Indian. Wholly determined to protect her family. Naomi Jackson made a mistake. Born in the tumultuous years following the American Revolution, she embraced change, excitement, and adventure. So when the Devil Bill Williams swaggered into town, she launched into his arms, determined that her love for him could overcome all obstacles. It couldn't. Now she has two young children, a life of misery, and a hopeless, desperate desire to escape. Then David Oxendine arrives for a Christmas visit - and things will never be the same. * * * Across the River - an 1800s Black / Native American Novella is the first in a series of novellas about Naomi Jackson's heartfelt, challenging life. These stories are based loosely on author Lisa Shea's real-life ancestor, Naomi Jackson, who was born in 1784 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Naomi's father had been taken from Northern Ireland as a child, while her mother was mixed-blood black, Lumbee, and Irish. Each novella has a cliff-hanger ending, much like Naomi's life. All author's proceeds from the Naomi Jackson series benefits local battered women's shelters. An important note for readers of my various series. Normally my content is quite "clean" with little to no swearing, violence, or physical intimacy. With this being based on the immense hardships my ancestor struggled through, I wanted to be authentic to the issues she rose above. This book therefore includes period-appropriate harsh language as well as several scenes of conflict. I gave a great deal of thought to including these and feel they are necessary to fully convey the trials she overcame. I apologize to those who feel uncomfortable reading that style of material. Please feel free to contact me at my website if you have any questions or comments - I thrive on your feedback.

Dr. Lilian 'Lily' Hendrix was born along the Mississippi delta, a Choctaw girl raised in a tight-knit community where responsibility, endurance, and care for others were learned early. From childhood, Lily displayed a remarkable intellect and an unshakable focus. At just fourteen years old, she defied every social and institutional expectation of her era by becoming the youngest girl ever accepted into medical school. Four years later, at eighteen, she graduated as a fully licensed physician-an achievement nearly unheard of for any woman, and extraordinary for a Native girl in the early twentieth century. Lily began her career at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where the volume of patients and severity of injuries forged her into a decisive, unflinching doctor. When the United States entered World War II, she joined the Army Medical Corps, refusing a safer stateside position in favor of frontline service. Her skill, speed, and ability to keep soldiers alive under impossible conditions quickly earned her a reputation that traveled through military ranks. That reputation led to a rare request: Lily was assigned as a temporary physician to the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment during training at Camp Toccoa. From there, she followed the men across Europe-treating shattered bodies in field hospitals, barns, and improvised aid stations, often under fire. To the soldiers, she became a steady presence amid chaos, known for her calm voice, relentless work, and refusal to abandon the wounded. After the war, Lily returned home believing her service was complete. Instead, she was informed that her wartime work would be classified, her contributions omitted from official records. For decades, her name remained absent from history, her heroism known only to those she had saved. Her story remained buried until 2001, when Band of Brothers brought renewed attention to the 506th and finally revealed her truth.

Though their worlds are vastly different, fate entwines them in a reality that grows stranger with every step. Shadows stir at the edges of their journey, whispering of forces long forgotten. An ancient power begins to awaken, carrying truths that could shatter everything they thought they knew. As Yolotl and Sisa struggle to understand the impossible, they discover allies in unexpected places-and realize that survival may depend on trust forged in the dark. This is the first fanfiction I've created based on the trailer, even though I don't know exactly what the official story will be about. I wanted to explore my own vision.

"ARGHH!" He yelled out as the spear piercing his throat, quite literally, cut into his words. The small golf cart-like safari car erupted in screams as her and her friends did whatever they could to put as much space between them and the now gushing man, which wasn't much. Cleo was scared shitless, but felt a call to action; she immediately leaned over and took the wheel, all the while crouching down. "OH MY FREAKING GOD!" Dionne screamed beside her, clutching her arm with a shaking hand as she ducked, hoping not to become the next spear's victim. CLUNK! The next spear collided with the cart and despite Cleo's best efforts, the cart went flying off the little dirt path and into the brush before colliding with a tree that promptly ejected all of it's passengers. 'Where is everyone?' she thought, preparing to run while dusting herself off. She was dazed from the tumble, and scanning the area around her haphazardly was all she could do, but it was making her dizzy. Dionne was still next to her, clutching her once again after getting herself together. 'That's good at least, one check. Three more.' A gutteral yell from one of the other check marks burst her thought bubble. "Tevon! Where are you?!" She screamed, spinning around, eyes hovering over the area frantically. There's too much brush. The only glimpse of T she got was his leg as someone drug him away, into the depths of the trees & bushes.
