No one in town talks about the forest anymore. Not after the disapperances. not after the cold winters when the wind started sounding like voices. Mara Calder never believed the stories. Skin Walkers stealing faces. The starving spirit in the trees that learns your name. Those were just things people said to scare kids away from the woods. But when Mara and her friends cross the old trail line, the forest grows quiet in a way that feels intentional. Footprints appear where no one walked. The wind whispers things it should not know. And when one of them disappear, something comes back wearing his smile. The Rules reveal themselves too late. Do not answer the voices you can not see. Do not follow the footprints that end too cleanly. and if someone returns alone... do not let them touch you. Because the forest is hungry. it is learning. And it does not let anyone leave unchanged. by the time Mara understands what is hunting them, the real question is no longer who will survive. it is who the forest plans to keep.

"It's okay," he whispers. "It's okay. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." Gathering up more air to breathe, I sniffle, "Promise?" He confidently nods against my chest. "I promise." And in this brief moment, as I squeeze my eyes shut and savor the tender, light-hearted sensation of holding this boy between my arms, I realize that all I want to do right now is stay this close to him. Forever. For the rest of my life. For however long the universe decides to give us. And that's what scares me. *HEADS UP: this book goes through monthly editing if I need to add or remove dialogue and scenes to make story flow better*

Zara is a witch - or a shaman, as her tribe calls it. To retrieve a lost amulet and save the life of her great-great-great-grandmother, she travels through time. This is a third-person paranormal fiction based on Native American mythology. I am not Native American, nor do I aspire to depict the tribes truthfully - this is just a story. I'm grateful for any feedback!
