My story is about a teenage girl named Ingrid 'Ida' that goes through the Holocaust and deals with the grief of losing her family for the rest of her life and sees more historical events in a new light THIS FIRST PART IS WINNER OF A Scholastic Art and Writing Society GOLDEN KEY AWARD FOR MY REGION.

She is an only child with both her mother and father gone in Europe fighting the Nazis. Miriam's mother is a nurse while her father a major in the United States Army. After a letter sent to her Uncle John- her father's brother who she is very close to, and a quick, but very devastating visit from the Army to Miriam's home: she has no choice but to see her father's wishes and move to Nazi Germany in Berlin- the beating heart of the Nazi regime on the outskirts of the city with her Uncle John and Aunt Elsa along with her cousins: Nico, Liesel, Greta, and Bruno. Who she is quiet close to. Miriam's world comes crashing down. With all her guy friends and ex-boyfriend who she is still madly in love with all overseas spread out in Europe fighting the war. Her Summer before senior year is nothing she expected it to be. All her girl friends and neighbors are the only ones she has, and now she has to leave them. How will this outspoken and passionate American teenage girl supposed to deal with all of this? How is she going to act and for how long will she have to keep up the charades?

A young Muslim woman must fight for her family, future, and right to exist when a hateful, fascist regime is elected to govern America. Author's Note: "A Light On the Sea" is a short 500 word story inspired by Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," for the #MyHandmaidsTale contest. The main character is named Noor, which means "light" in Arabic. This story is a work of fiction, but the hateful statements within the story are inspired by actual comments made by sitting politicians and pundits, which makes the story all the more chilling. I wanted to use fiction to show how harmful and dangerous this kind of rhetoric is -- and how quickly it can escalate. Genocide is a slow process. No holocaust begins with physical violence. It begins with the normalization of hate speech.
