17-year-old Raelynn Farlor, who attends Carson City Crystal High School is a victim of abuse from her guardians (Her cousin and Aunt). Some of her friends have suspicions of abuse, but couldn't be 100 percent sure, as Raelynn wouldn't be open to it with them. But she was open about it with her boyfriend, Kevin Stolway. Kevin was a year older than Raeylnn, and they fell in love when he spotted her in the marching band during one of his football games. They became best friends and eventually started a relationship. On her birthday, October 18th, Raelynn and Kevin planned to leave. Raelynn and Kevin had anything packed. She wanted to start somewhere new and get away from the abuse. She wanted to get away from her abusers. She went to school that day, a normal day to everyone else around her, but to her and Kevin, it was their escape day. But it all went downhill in the first hour when a fire started in chemistry their first hour. And Raelynn wasn't fast enough to get out of the classroom until Kevin had to kick down the door with the teacher to pull Raelynn out. after school finished that day, they loaded the rest of the stuff into Kevin's vehicle while her cousin and aunt were at work and took off to move from Michigan to start fresh in Belen, New Mexico, a place where Raelynn grew up and wanted to go back. During the journey, when Kevin had gone into a gas station in Texas, he came back to find Raelynn missing. He looked frantically, called the cops, but the cops wouldn't do anything. Her phone was left in the passenger seat, but no sign of Raelynn in sight. He spent days looking for her when he started getting dreams, hearing her voice call to him to find her, and leave hints. At first, he thought he was going crazy, but then he realized maybe she was trying to reach him telepathically. Until one day, one of those dreams led him to the doorstep of the most wanted killer in all of Texas.

At first Izzy keeps her distance from prickly Grandpa Serge, whose eyes are impossibly old and who chastises "Eee-sabella" for spitting on her roots. But as the summer drags on and the heat bears down, she finds herself drawn to Serge, enchanted by his stories about an oasis in the desert with a green-glass lake and a tree that gave the villagers the gift of immortality-and the bees that kept the tree alive. When Serge weaves details of his own life into his stories and tells her to keep an eye out for the bees he is certain will return to the ranch and end the century-long drought, she chalks it up to dementia. But as the thin line between magic and reality starts to blur, Izzy must decide for herself what is possible- and what it means to be true to her roots.

Cabin Life travels through cabins I have inhabited from New Mexico to Maine, from the Missouri Ozarks to Colorado and Arizona. It is merely a memoir, and of an unimportant person no less, but it records a journey in which my guides were Henry David Thoreau and Edward Abbey and my mistress nature.
